| Sanshin no Kata - Japan: The Land of the Tree Spirit Form of Three Hearts, by Masaaki HatsumiThe following article was originally published in Bujin Magazine (Volume 1 Number 8). A number of minor typographic corrections were made to this copy to ease the "readability" of the article. No changes were made that would alter the meaning of the text. It was written and compiled from a variety of sources and authored by the Bujinkan York Dôjô primary instructor Greg Stough. There are a wide variety of interpretations for almost every aspect of the Bujinkan, including Kamae. This is contrary to most martial arts which usually have very specific and exact forms for Kata and Kamae (fighting postures). Neither Hatsumi Sensei, nor his head instructors, have ever provided any specific and detailed description of these Kamae, or any others. These detailed descriptions of Gyokko Ryű Kamae are based on close examination of a wide variety of written text, photographs, and videotapes originating from Hatsumi Sensei. The author does not claim that these descriptions are absolutely correct, or the only correct form, for Hatsumi Sensei never indicates a single "precise" way of doing anything. This fact is a problem for some persons who have only seen or learned "one" way of doing the Kamae, and other things too. They believe that "their" way is the correct way and all others are wrong. Quite obviously there are some ways of representing these Kamae that do not represent the feel or nature of the Gyokko Ryű at all. However at this time the author believes that this description is accurate, and a presents a reasonable representation of the Gyokko Ryű Kamae.
