Training at the York Bujinkan Dôjô

The mission of the York Bujinkan Dôjô is to provide the most complete self-defense training, and related information, to its members and associates. This information, both knowledge and skills, must be transferred to each and every student as rapidly and completely as possible, for we never know when it will be needed.

Any self-defense program must be holistic to be complete. Therefore, it must include the "before" (prevention or avoidance), "during" (attack management) and "after" (legal, financial, and psychological preparation) of an incident. For anything less would leave one vulnerable for danger, or injuries, in one form or another.

Everyone is welcome at our Dôjô! This includes persons training in other martial arts, and those with no training at all. The only thing that we ask is that everyone training with us leave their pride and ego outside the Dôjô. We do everything  possible to insure that everyone gets along well together. There is no room for politics, cliques, and petty disagreements.

We believe that the best learning environment is one of complete cooperation with each other, and not one of competition. It is only through cooperation that everyone's goal can be in the constant improvement and development in the skills of the entire group. Truly competitive persons only "take," to become better than others, and not "give," to make sure everyone else becomes better. If everyone in a Dôjô is always trying to help "others" to grow, the entire group becomes quite skilled through this group effort. But, when one is only competitive they are afraid to help others, for this "other" person could become better than he, or she. That type of disposition can stifle growth, because everyone must "reinvent the wheel" with each new skill, or level of growth, for the persons that "know" won't truly help those that don't.

Everyone training, and especially those who join us regularly, become a close "family member", and are treated as such, by everyone. We strive for a training environment in which everyone enjoys training with everyone else. Our students do their best to provide a fun place to train while making sure everyone learns many new things at each and every class, regardless of one's level of experience.

All skills and techniques are taught in a manner that allows everyone to learn as quickly as possible. We do not "spoon feed" our students, by giving them just small pieces of information that is spread out over a long period of time. Unfortunately, there are some instructors that do. If anything, our students are fed by shovels! Every class is filled with large amounts of detailed information geared to each and every skill, from the beginner to the advanced student. This information contains the "nuts and bolts" details on how to make techniques work safer and more efficiently. The instructor himself was brought up in this type of "information packed" learning environment and has found a notable difference between students fed by "spoons" and those fed by "shovels!"

Everyone is encouraged to actively participate in each and every skill and exercise. No one is ever held back or prevented from learning any technique or skill being taught during class, regardless of their skill level or amount of time training at this Dôjô. We want everyone training with us to learn all skills as quickly as possible, for there are always many more skills to learn.

Origins of Techniques

Since our goal is to become as skilled as possible in our self-defense methods, we must be constantly looking for better ways of achieving this goal. Our training is based on the teachings of Masaaki Hatsumi, Sôke of the Bujinkan Budô Taijutsu. It is our belief that the Bujinkan System is the most complete system of self-defense available. In instances concerning topics not addressed (or incompletely addressed) by the Bujinkan, other renowned professionals in the field will be sought out to fulfill these gaps in knowledge or skills.

All attempts will be made to insure that the information acquired from outside sources carefully integrates and complements the "universal principles" as taught by Hatsumi Sensei. These "universal principles" are a necessary ingredient for all true skills, regardless of their origin, Bujinkan or otherwise. These principles act as a catalyst that allow us, the Bujinkan as a whole, to occasionally borrow, and modify, techniques and ideas from outside sources and make them our own.

As a general rule, the Bujinkan system is almost totally complete in its skills and methods. It is far more complete than all other systems of martial arts or self-defense, that this author is familiar. However, there are a few areas of study that are not addressed adequately. Since our mission is to provide complete, or holistic, training these gaps must be filled. In the event that new, or previously unknown, information is made available from the Bujinkan, that fulfills any gaps, the most reliable and effective skills known to us will be taught, as always. For our goal is to become as skilled as possible in all areas related, directly or indirectly, to self-defense.
