The following information is presented here as a valuable resource to persons interested in learning authentic Bujinkan Budô Taijutsu (BBT). This information is valuable to persons in the south-central Pennsylvania area and around the world too. Each martial art and self-defense system has their own unique requirements that determine who is, and who is not, an qualified instructor. Below are the requirements to become an instructor in Bujinkan Budô Taijutsu as determined by Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi.

Instructor

Instructors must possess the following official documents that are written in Japanese and issued by Hatsumi Sensei.

Assistant Instructor

Assistant Instructors (shidoshi-ho) must possess the following official documents that are written in Japanese and issued by Hatsumi Sensei, OR be teaching under very close supervision on a fully qualified instructor.

Training Group

A group of people that are interested in BBT and usually have some "limited experience" but do not have a qualified instructor that regularly teaches class. The person(s) teaching could have a black-belt, a green belt or have no rank at all in BBT. Sometimes, these groups work totally on their own and try to attend BBT seminars whenever possible to increase their limited knowledge. Other times they may have a working relationship with a qualified instructor. ALL HONEST TRAINING GROUPS WILL IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS HAVING LIMITED INSTRUCTIONAL ABILITIES, AND WHO, IF ANYONE, IS THEIR INSTRUCTOR MENTOR.

Fake

Any person who blatantly lies or deceptively misleads others with greatly exaggerated claims of their knowledge of Bujinkan Budô Taijutsu and their qualifications and authorization to teach. There are people with absolutely no experience in BBT that are claiming to teach BBT. There are other people that have very limited experience in BBT and have not trained with any BBT instructor (nor attended any seminars) for many years, but still claim to be teaching it. Some of these people even have low level BBT black-belts too. Many times these deceptive persons will use Hatsumi Sensei's name freely and may also use their past instructors name freely too. This "name dropping" is only to make it appear like they are legitimate instructors.

Important Note!
Hatsumi Sensei supplies ALL certificates of promotion, from green-belt to black-belt. If your instructor is promoting you, and telling you that it is for Bujinkan Budô Taijutsu, you MUST receive official Japanese certificates. Hatsumi Sensei says that no other fake certificates (those not issued by him) are valid. Below are examples of what these certificates should look like.

Kyû Certificate

Shodan Certificate

Godan Certificate

Judan Certificate

Teaching Certificate

These certificates have all been issued by Hatsumi Sensei. Your "official" certificates should very similar to these, but there will be a few differences in persons name, date and rank. There will also may be differences in the stamps applied to the certificates. The bottom two images are wallet type cards and must be issued annually. Only the front of these cards has been shown here.
