Course Description
This class is an introduction to defending oneself
against Blunt Weapons. The main focus is on using proper body movement
to avoid basic Blunt Weapon attacks while simultaneously gaining control
of the weapon and the aggressor. Impact Weapon Retention leading to
immediate physical control of an aggressor is also covered.
Course Outline
I. Avoiding the Attack
- Overhead attacks
- Swinging strikes
- Thrusts
II. Strikes and Stuns
- Pressure points
- Nerve centers
III. Restraint and Control Techniques
IV. Impact Weapon Retention
- Directing an assailant to the
ground
- Releasing a weapon
Benefits to Participant
Each participant learns through extensive practice
how to avoid various types of Blunt Weapon Attacks. This includes both
swinging and thrusting types of attacks. Through a series of
progressions, the officer learns how to 1) Stun the aggressor, and then
2) Control the weapon and its user, after avoiding the initial attack.
The main emphasis is on gaining control of the assailant's weapon and
directing him or her to a controlled position on the ground. Only then
is the weapon removed from the assailant's possession. To round out the
training, the officer learns several methods to release grabs from his
own impact weapon. In addition, the participant learns how to use a grab
to his own weapon to immediately direct the aggressor to the ground and
in a controlled position.
Overall Program Benefits
This is a unique program designed around a solid core
of knowledge and skills. This core is fundamental to every class in this
series. A first time participant learns effective and safe techniques
for the ‘situational emphasis' of each class. Officers attending
additional classes learn new skills that are reinforced with the common
elements of Proper Body Movement—to avoid attacks and maintain a safe
position, Correct Leverage—necessary for techniques to work easily and
with minimum strength, and Balance Control—to direct and control an
assailant's equilibrium while the officer maintains his or her balance.
These three elements are vital for all Defensive Tactics skills, but are
usually not addressed adequately. The techniques presented are generally
non-aggressive in appearance. The skills are however, safe, easy to
learn, and very effective. This program allows an officer the
opportunity to learn new techniques while reinforcing the common
elements necessary for all Defensive Tactics skills.
