A Support-Side Block is very effective in blocking a
horizontal threat directed at your head, neck, chest (or flank), or hip area.
This horizontal threat may be from a person's fist, foot, elbow or knee.
Using the Two-Handed
Carry Position, move your baton in a vertical position towards your
Support-Side. Be sure to keep the grip portion pointing straight down and the
long portion pointing straight up. The fingers of your Support Hand should be
open and behind the long portion of the baton as you block the object. At the
moment of contact with the striking object or threat, the long portion
blocking surface should be at a right angle to the object or threat. Following
the Support-Side Block, assess the situation, then take appropriate follow-up
action as needed.
Lesson and Minimum Acceptable Performance Standards
-
Assume the Two-Handed
Carry Position.
-
Move your baton in a vertical
position toward your Support-Side being sure to keep the grip portion
pointing straight down and the long portion pointing straight up.
-
The baton should be in a
vertical position on your Support-Side as it absorbs the shock of the blow.
-
The fingers of your Support
Hand should be open and behind the long portion of the baton as you block
the threat, attack or object.
-
At the moment of contact with
the striking object or threat, the long portion blocking surface should be
at a right angle to the object or threat.
-
Following a Support-Side Block,
assess the situation, then take appropriate follow-up action as needed.
Special Note
A slight angle in the baton blocking surface can be
achieved by pushing your support hand slightly forward of your strong hand,
use caution since a striking object may travel down (or along) your baton and
hit your strong hand. Using an angled blocking surface is permissible for this
blocking technique.
A Pattern of Movement such as a Forward
Shuffle or a Support Sidestep may
enhance the effectiveness of this technique.
